Pick-your-own pumpkins, weekends in October
Field update · October 2
We’re open this weekend for pumpkin picking, Saturday, October 3 and Sunday, October 4, from 12 to 4. There won’t be hay rides this weekend. Check back here next week for an update.
Flint Farm is a working farm in Lincoln with a pumpkin patch, a hay wagon, a small herd of alpacas, and pretty much no advertising. Because we don’t advertise, a lot of the families who find us get the whole field to themselves.
If you’ve done October at one of the big pick-your-own places, you know how it goes. You park in a field a quarter mile away, wait in line for a wagon, and spend the afternoon trying not to lose your four-year-old in a crowd of other four-year-olds.
It’s quieter here. Your kids can run down a row without crashing into anybody, and you can take as long as you want to find the right pumpkin, which will almost certainly be the one nobody can carry. That’s what the wagons are for.
| Pumpkins | $1 per pound |
|---|---|
| Edible squash | $1 per pound |
| Decorative gourds (small) | $1 each, or 5 for $3 |
| Hay rides | $5 per person ($15 max per family) |
There are pumpkins, of course, plus edible squash if you’d like to turn the outing into dinner. And there are decorative gourds for the table, the front steps, or the kid who insists on naming one and carrying it around until Thanksgiving.
Hay rides are $5 a person, with a $15 max per family, and they run whenever the ground can handle a tractor. We decide week by week, and the answer will be in the field update at the top of this page.
I’m a family photographer, and this farm is where I do most of my sessions.
During a session here, kids can sit on the tractors, feed the alpacas, and run amok through the fields. It ends up feeling more like a fun day on the farm where someone happens to be taking your picture than a stiff “stand here and look at the camera” portrait session.
The pumpkin patch is one spot, but the whole farm is fair game, and the alpacas, cows, and horses tend to wander into the background and steal the show.
