I recently photographed these two sweet families at our farm in Lincoln, Massachusetts for their annual fall photo session—and it was their fourth year in a row coming back! The foliage was at absolute peak in October, the weather couldn’t have been more perfect, and the late afternoon light was just magical. After four years together, we’ve really hit our stride, and I think you can see it in the photos.

One of the things I love most about working with this crew year after year is how they approach our sessions. For them, the photo shoot isn’t a chore to check off the list or something to get through before the “real fun” begins. The session is the fun part, and that mindset makes all the difference. The kids aren’t performing for the camera—they’re genuinely having a blast, and it shows.
This year, we spent most of our time in one of the big open fields across from the animals. This gave us room to really take advantage of the stunning fall foliage and blue sky, and try some more creative portraits. We got the kids throwing armfuls of leaves in the air, dancing across the field (complete with breakdancing moves from each of them!), and even captured a beautiful silhouette of them jumping against that gorgeous October sky.

Here’s something sweet about this group: these are two sisters who both had their first child just months apart. The little boy and girl you see running around together? They’re actually cousins, though you’d never guess it. They live close to each other and have the tightest bond—watching them together is such a joy.
The farm has become their go-to location for outdoor family photography because there’s so much variety. Each year we can do something completely different, which keeps things fresh and fun. From the open fields to the wooded areas to the animal paddocks, there’s always a new backdrop to explore.

I’ll be honest—getting a portrait that works for a holiday card can be tricky with four young kids. You want that frame-worthy shot where everyone’s looking and smiling naturally, not with those forced, say-cheese grins. Over the years, this group has taught me so much about navigating that balance. I throw in prompts, encourage silliness, and look for genuine laughter. Not every kid responds to the same kind of humor, but these four have been amazing teachers in helping me figure out how to keep things easygoing while still getting those traditional portraits families treasure.

What I’ve learned from our fall family photo sessions together is that when kids feel like they’re playing rather than posing, the magic happens naturally. And after four years of fall foliage photo shoots on the farm, this family has it down to an art.

If you’re looking for a Lincoln Mass family photographer who believes photo sessions should feel like an adventure (not a chore), I’d love to work with you. Whether it’s your first session or your fourth annual tradition, let’s create something beautiful together. Reach out to schedule your fall family session—I can’t wait to meet you!
